thanks to firda we know that, blogdex predicted 15 of 29 bloggies. good enough to be a casino, but blogdex only has data for 5 months. given the nature of the voting (popular vote), and the type of statistics that blogdex maintains (popular vote), blogdex should pick winners. if the statistics could be constrained to the year of voting, they should be more accurate. i guess we'll have to wait another year to find out.
i've tightened up the interface a bit. i was getting a bit tired of the "wired vox populi" phrase as it is.
i also made a rash decision to flip the indexes. the front page now displays the "fresh" index, while the former "recent" index has been renamed to "charts." in the future i'm hoping to have billboard-style statistics for memes (i.e. meme x has reached a maximum of #4, and was in the top 25 for 5 days).
i think that people should be happy with these changes, but if not they're easily reversible.
one of the reasons that i'm a bit behind is that i have been working on my own weblog. i decided that it was finally time to infiltrate the social network :)
i almost forgot! blogdex has been chosen as a finalst in the south by southwest interactive awards! it's quite an honor to be listed in the same ranks as mena trott and backwash, among others.
i'm also part of the panel "p2p journalism: weblogs and collaborative media," spearheaded by the illustrious meg hourihan. i hope to see you there!
i was away for a week in california dealing with a family emergency, so i'm a bit behind with adding the new sites. i should be back on track sometime in the middle of this week.
i think that we need an accurate count of weblogs. today an article cited blogdex's statistics as a guage of the weblog world, with 13,119 weblogs worth indexing. of course we all know that the true number is much higher, and i usually estimate around 400,000, given the totals i have received from livejournal and blogger.
does anyone else have a better estimate?
there was a sort of long network outage this morning at the media lab, which brought blogdex down for the better half of sunday. none of the operational parts of blogdex were affected, but the web server was inaccessible for that time.
i'm back at my lab after a long and relaxing break. this period of time at MIT is referred to as the "independent activites period," which means that i will be working exclusively on blogdex for the next few weeks. here's a few of the things i'll be working on:
1. meme history: given the number of emails that i get about "can you tell me the url for meme x?" this feature is long overdue. it would be nice to see which memes have lasted the longest on the charts.
2. email digest: for people that prefer push to pop, we'll provide a daily and weekly email of memes on blogdex
3. social network explorer: i'm hoping to finish this sometime over the next couple of days. i need to create a few utilities to find and navigate these sites, along with a few social network measures that i've been working on.
if you've got any other suggestions, now's the time to bring them up, since i have the time.
